This session is great for anyone, really because I think these tenets kind of apply to both students as well as when you get into the working world and you start writing resumes and applications these can apply to there too. Cath Anne: [00:01:43] So, really this session is great for students who are in high school and they are looking at applying for the first time to university or college. But, its also really great for students who are already in an undergraduate degree and theyre looking to apply to a Masters program or other another post-graduate program or even a college. Cath Anne: [00:02:06] These are just some tips and tricks that weve picked up along the way and some content that weve developed specifically around this topic. If that appeals to you, please continue to tune in. I wont take up too much of your time, but I do have some really good information for you. Cath Anne: [00:02:28] First of all, I wanted to just say that we do host this show on a weekly basis. Last week we took a little bit of a break. But, were back this week, and we want to give you some really great content this week. Cath Anne: [00:02:42] So, as I mentioned as first semester is beginning to wrap up, of course, it is the time of year where you have to apply to college. Today, there is a lot of weight placed in having a higher education and sometimes that means you have to apply to multiple programs following your undergraduate, if that is the route that you wish to pursue. Now, you might graduate from your undergraduate or your college degree or you might even just graduate from high school and go into the working world. That is totally fine. But, if you do choose to go the academic route, and choose to engage in higher education, then youre going to have to apply to some different universities. So, if you do have the desire to apply to a Masters or another program, Id like to provide you with some information about how to best write these applications, because they can be a little bit tricky sometimes. Cath Anne: [00:03:55] So, as I mentioned, as well these tips can apply to applying to jobs and applying to university or college. If you are a high school student as well so its not just specific to people who are looking to go to a Masters degree or even a doctorate degree. These tips can really apply to anyone. Cath Anne: [00:04:17] I kind of want to start off the session by saying, I just want to put this out there that, university and college are not for everyone. There was a time when university and college were pushed as something that everyone had to do. Nowadays, there are a lot of other options. I dont dissuade people from pursuing a university or college degree because that education and that experience is absolutely invaluable. But, if youre the type of person that doesnt feel compelled to attend college or university, or you feel like you want to wait to decide. Definitely trust your gut and go with what you want to do. Cath Anne: [00:05:03] If you have an amazing entrepreneurial idea that you want to pursue. Theres so much opportunity out there now. I would say go for it and pursue it. I was just reading a really great post on media about letting go of our cultural definition of success. The article proposed that we all we dont all have to follow the same path by going to Ivy League universities or prestigious programs. Sometimes this idea gets pushed that we have to have everything figured out you know by our 20s or by 25 or even by 30 and its just not the case. You can pursue your lifes path the way you want to. So, if youre feeling frustrated or overwhelmed by the process of figuring out what your future holds, keep heart and know that not everyone has the same path and that you can carve your own path. It doesnt necessarily have to follow what other people are doing or fall in line with what North American or Western culture dictates that you need to do. I mean certainly education is never a ba d thing, but there are all kinds of ways to gain an education. Follow your dream. Even if you dont know what that is. Start taking steps towards finding out, so that might mean applying to a university degree and getting a little bit of education. Or maybe that means taking advantage of that really great business idea. So whatever it is move in the direction of your happiness. Whatever you think your happiness is going to entail, and the rest will fall into place. I promise. Cath Anne: [00:06:52] One of the first steps in doing this is, and I was just having a conversation with my friend about this today, is avoid comparing yourself to other people. Everyones life is going to look different and you need to make sure that youre doing what is best for you. So, I know this sounds a bit of a lecture, but this is something that Ive been thinking about a lot today, and that I just wanted to pass on in case anyone is feeling a little bit down, you know just keep heart and follow what is best for you. Cath Anne: [00:07:28] (To Instagram Viewer): Hello. I see someone jumped on I dont know who it is but nice to see you. Its Cath Anne. Cath Anne: [00:07:36] Today were talking about how do you write strong college applications. But, I was just talking about how college and university isnt necessarily for everyone. Hi Andrew. And if you do feel compelled to do something different. By all means pursue that dream. Cath Anne: [00:08:01] (To Instagram Viewer): Are you a student currently or? Youre a student. What school they go to? If you dont mind saying, what are you taking? Bachelor of Arts? or Bachelor of Science? Oh, youre looking to apply to a Masters degree in Switzerland. Thats exciting. Cool. I think that would be great. I think that is a really wise thing to study right now. I think MBA is a great degree to have. Oh and youre in Croatia. I have a friend who, Im in Canada, but I have a friend who was originally from Croatia, that I went to high school with. So, youre looking to apply to Business Admin. Yeah, I think its a really great program to have right now. I think business skills are necessary the way the world is going. So, I think thats a really smart idea and youre looking. Are you looking to do a masters in business as well? Well, Im glad that you came, Andrew, because we are going to give you some tips about how to apply to schools, so hopefully this will be helpful for you, a nd if you do have any questions please dont hesitate to ask. Cath Anne: [00:10:16] So, Im going to jump into the content. I just kind of gave an overview about, if you dont feel like youre the type of person to pursue the academic path, there are all kinds of paths out there. So, dont get discouraged. Do follow your dream. Follow what makes you happy. Cath Anne: [00:10:44] (To Instagram Viewer): Just undergrad. I just paused because I caught your question, Mandy. What do you mean just undergrad? The tips that Im giving can apply to either a Masters application or an undergraduate application. Certainly Ive applied to, I think three Masters programs, so I can definitely share some of my thoughts on that as well. Yeah, theyre both similar. I definitely think that Masters programs are a bit more in depth. Youre right. So, we can talk a little bit about that are you thinking of applying to a Masters program. Yes. Cath Anne: [00:11:47] (To Instagram Viewer): If you do have any questions, I dont know everything, but I can definitely share my expertise, and share some of my thoughts about my own experience. So, just so you guys know I do work for Homework Help Global, Im one of their top writers and I host this show. I also have a background in social work. So, Ive done quite a few years of college and university as well. So, to see you guys kind of know my background, I know you guys have been havent been here, so just to give a little bit of background on myself. So, youve already completed your undergrad and what are you thinking of taking for your Masters? I dont know if youve looked into many of the applications yet, but I found when I was applying to schools that each school kind of had different requirements. Cath Anne: [00:13:17] First of all, its really important to read the applications thoroughly and understand what their requirements are because sometimes it can take some time to gather up all the information that is required of the application. You really dont want to leave that until the last minute. (To Instagram Viewer): So, Mandy youre are thinking of possibly a direct entry nursing program that offers RN and NP accelerated. Okay cool, yeah. I think thats a great way to go, too. I mean nursing is always going to be a needed profession, and its well paid which it should be because youre taking care of peoples health. I think its definitely on the rise. Nursing seems to be becoming more popular and its rewarding because you get to help people, so thats a really noble profession. Cath Anne: [00:14:20] In terms of what I want to share with you guys today, first, the most important part of an application is that youre going to want to make sure that you do your research thoroughly. Mandy, I am talking to you, but Im also talking to the camera on my computer, as well because we record these sessions and put them up on YouTube. So, I am speaking with you. I just want you to think that Im ignoring you. Cath Anne: [00:14:50] So when youre applying, find out which program most interests you and dig into the criteria which are required of you. So in your application you can use the information you gave in your research to make a case for being a good fit for that particular university. Cath Anne: [00:15:10] Some universities abide by a specific approach. So, for example, when I applied to social work school, I knew that schools like York and Ryerson had a specifically anti-oppressive and critical focus. When I was writing my applications, I wrote them through that lens. I had to do some research on what was critical social work and what was anti-oppressive social work. Its really important to understand the theories and perspectives each school promotes in order to determine if it aligns with your goals as a professional and your values. Cath Anne: [00:15:51] (To Instagram Viewer): You need the most help with your essay. OK. Do you know what the essay requires, Mandy? Is it like a letter of intent? Do you need a word around figuring out what to write or how to write it? Im going to keep going because, Mandy seems like Instagram has dropped off there for minutes. Cath Anne: [00:17:13] Another really great tip is that this is also a really good time to look at potential professors that they would like to collaborate with in terms of research. If youre entering your research program, particularly if youre applying to a Masters, finding professors whose work interests you can really be an asset. Cath Anne: [00:17:30] If you go on the website, the schools website, theres usually a section that Ill have a breakdown of each professor that teaches at that school and the types of things that they teach. The reason that this is really great is because you can use this information and if youre intrigued by a certain professor, this is something that you can mention in your application. Usually if youre applying to a Masters program theyre going to ask you about your potential research. A Masters usually requires some component of research. So, theyre going to ask you about what kind of research that you are going to produce as a student. Cath Anne: [00:18:12] Using the name of the professor and drawing on what theyve researched if you dont really have an idea of what your research is going to look like, can be a really beneficial way to get in there and show the university that youre invested in that school and in becoming a student at that school. Another reason this is really great is because schools require research in order to sustain funding and to keep going as a University and also for accreditation purposes. Cath Anne: [00:18:47] This is a very strategic maneuver to mention a particular professor and to discuss what kinds of things that youre interested in researching because this can look really great for your application. It shows that you have a commitment to that school, in particular, and that you have something to invest into that school. Youre not only asking them to take you on, youre showing what you can provide as a future student of that school. That is a highly recommended strategy for this process. Cath Anne: [00:19:57] Secondly, it might be tempting to leave your application to the last minute. They can definitely seem daunting, because there is a large component of writing to them, particularly if youre applying to a masters degree. But, leaving them to the last minute is not recommended. I know that it can seem like a lot of work to do on top of the work that youre already probably doing in your classes. Cath Anne: [00:21:00] Taking the time to write strong college applications is just going to be invaluable to you in your future in academia. So, all these applications require a certain amount of sealed transcripts and other pieces of information. Maybe youve gone to a few different undergraduate schools and you might have to track down your transcripts from all of those places. So, that takes time because they have to be mailed. Cath Anne: [00:21:35] A lot of schools will not e-mail or fax; they require an official transcript, so its really important to look ahead and look at whats going to be required of your application and make sure you give yourself lots of time to fulfill those requirements. You also have to write a letter of intent or some essay component. Sometimes there are ones with different questions to them. You want to give yourself lots of time particularly if youre applying to multiple different schools. Different schools can ask different things of you and you dont want to write the same essay for different schools. Its just not good practice. Cath Anne: [00:22:20] I highly recommend giving yourself at least a few months, if not longer to prepare your applications. You also have to write your resume, or your curriculum vitae, depending on which format you choose. That can take some time. Remember this is a school that you really want to get into. Make sure youre writing meaningfully and with intent because if you choose not to spend time on this the people that are reading the applications theyre going to be your future professors and theyre going to be people who are screening to see if you are a good fit for this institution. They are going to be able to tell if youre invested, so youre really going to want to write with meaning, write with intent. Another is to, after youve finished your application, you might feel that its kind of a highly personalized document I find. You might be sensitive to not wanting to have someone else to read it. However, its important that you give a second pair of eyes when you are about to submit your application. Cath Anne: [00:23:51] It is important to get a second set of eyes when youre applying to a school. Of course, youre going to want anything that you write to be proof read. You want to make sure that it is someone who knows you pretty well, who knows your work, and whos going to make a good reference for you. Cath Anne: [00:25:12] You dont want to choose someone who doesnt really know you that well who can write something specific about you. Give yourself time to do that as well. The best approach when youre looking for references is to always ask the person first if you can use them as a reference in particular when youre doing Masters applications its likely that theyll have to write something. Cath Anne: [00:25:39] Keeping that in mind just make sure you give yourself lots of time to approach that person or to write them a nice email and request that they support you in your academic future. Cath Anne: [00:25:54] Another thing to be mindful of when youre writing your applications is dont pretend to be someone else. So, it really might be tempting to embellish your accomplishments or write about things that you dont really know about thinking that make you seem more appealing. Its like a resume. You know, youre trying to sell yourself in a way, but the truth is if you dont tell the truth about yourself and if youre not being genuine it will come through in your writing. The last thing you want to do when youre applying to a school is to be caught in an untruth. Cath Anne: [00:26:31] Just like who you are shine through and your skills shine through and you will likely be accepted to the college or university of your choice. In combination with all of those strategies I dont see why not. Cath Anne: [00:27:00] So, when youre writing your application its kind of like a resume or cover letter. Its not just going to be a list of your skills or accomplishments or things that youve done. That is how people are going to become engaged, and get to know you through your piece of writing. Have you started your own small business? Even if you didnt in high school, thats really interesting. Have you been involved with volunteering or starting up a group in your community in some way? Have you been interviewed on a podcast? Do you play a sport? All of these things are what make you unique, and things that make you really interesting and that make you stand out from the crowd. Think about the ways that you can use your uniqueness to promote yourself to your new school. But, if you dont feel like you have that much that is un ique can you think of ways that you can start to become more engaged in making yourself more interesting? While it might seem like a waste of time to you to join a volleyball team when youre invested in your undergrad, participation and engagement in those kinds of things can open up so many new opportunities for networking, for meeting new people and it can definitely increase your interesting factor. [00:30:23] So just think about it. If a CEO of a company asks how youve engage in teamwork. One person discusses a work environment, and you relate your experience to a volleyball tournament. That just makes you stand out from the crowd and makes things a little bit different for you and might give you an advantage in a competitive work environment. The same thing applies to college applications. So, if youre thinking about potentially applying to a Masters or university in some capacity, think about ways that you can make yourself interesting, and its also going to do you something to look forward to and to live for. [00:31:04] So, its really important that we be mindful of how we are more than our jobs and we are more than what we do in school. Make yourself interesting and make yourself appealing to employers and future universities. It is going to contribute a lot to your life as well. It is about student life as well as academic life. We try to give you advice tips and tricks to help you navigate student life and being a student and all that entails. So, as I mentioned this week, were going to be talking about how to really maximize your potential when you are writing applications for university and college. Cath Anne: [00:01:06] I know that at this point in the year those applications are starting to come up and youre also trying to navigate all of the other responsibilities that come along with school like papers and tests and exams. I wanted to give you some support around writing those applications. This session is great for anyone, really because I think these tenets kind of apply to both students as well as when you get into the working world and you start writing resumes and applications these can apply to there too. Cath Anne: [00:01:43] So, really this session is great for students who are in high school and they are looking at applying for the first time to university or college. But, its also really great for students who are already in an undergraduate degree and theyre looking to apply to a Masters program or other another post-graduate program or even a college. Cath Anne: [00:02:06] These are just some tips and tricks that weve picked up along the way and some content that weve developed specifically around this topic. If that appeals to you, please continue to tune in. I wont take up too much of your time, but I do have some really good information for you. Cath Anne: [00:02:28] First of all, I wanted to just say that we do host this show on a weekly basis. Last week we took a little bit of a break. But, were back this week, and we want to give you some really great content this week. Cath Anne: [00:02:42] So, as I mentioned as first semester is beginning to wrap up, of course, it is the time of year where you have to apply to college. Today, there is a lot of weight placed in having a higher education and sometimes that means you have to apply to multiple programs following your undergraduate, if that is the route that you wish to pursue. Now, you might graduate from your undergraduate or your college degree or you might even just graduate from high school and go into the working world. That is totally fine. But, if you do choose to go the academic route, and choose to engage in higher education, then youre going to have to apply to some different universities. So, if you do have the desire to apply to a Masters or another program, Id like to provide you with some information about how to best write these applications, because they can be a little bit tricky sometimes. Cath Anne: [00:03:55] So, as I mentioned, as well these tips can apply to applying to jobs and applying to university or college. If you are a high school student as well so its not just specific to people who are looking to go to a Masters degree or even a doctorate degree. These tips can really apply to anyone. Cath Anne: [00:04:17] I kind of want to start off the session by saying, I just want to put this out there that, university and college are not for everyone. There was a time when university and college were pushed as something that everyone had to do. Nowadays, there are a lot of other options. I dont dissuade people from pursuing a university or college degree because that education and that experience is absolutely invaluable. But, if youre the type of person that doesnt feel compelled to attend college or university, or you feel like you want to wait to decide. Definitely trust your gut and go with what you want to do. Cath Anne: [00:05:03] If you have an amazing entrepreneurial idea that you want to pursue. Theres so much opportunity out there now. I would say go for it and pursue it. I was just reading a really great post on media about letting go of our cultural definition of success. The article proposed that we all we dont all have to follow the same path by going to Ivy League universities or prestigious programs. Sometimes this idea gets pushed that we have to have everything figured out you know by our 20s or by 25 or even by 30 and its just not the case. You can pursue your lifes path the way you want to. So, if youre feeling frustrated or overwhelmed by the process of figuring out what your future holds, keep heart and know that not everyone has the same path and that you can carve your own path. It doesnt necessarily have to follow what other people are doing or fall in line with what North American or Western culture dictates that you need to do. I mean certainly education is never a ba d thing, but there are all kinds of ways to gain an education. Follow your dream. Even if you dont know what that is. Start taking steps towards finding out, so that might mean applying to a university degree and getting a little bit of education. Or maybe that means taking advantage of that really great business idea. So whatever it is move in the direction of your happiness. Whatever you think your happiness is going to entail, and the rest will fall into place. I promise. Cath Anne: [00:06:52] One of the first steps in doing this is, and I was just having a conversation with my friend about this today, is avoid comparing yourself to other people. Everyones life is going to look different and you need to make sure that youre doing what is best for you. So, I know this sounds a bit of a lecture, but this is something that Ive been thinking about a lot today, and that I just wanted to pass on in case anyone is feeling a little bit down, you know just keep heart and follow what is best for you. Cath Anne: [00:07:28] (To Instagram Viewer): Hello. I see someone jumped on I dont know who it is but nice to see you. Its Cath Anne. Cath Anne: [00:07:36] Today were talking about how do you write strong college applications. But, I was just talking about how college and university isnt necessarily for everyone. Hi Andrew. And if you do feel compelled to do something different. By all means pursue that dream. Cath Anne: [00:08:01] (To Instagram Viewer): Are you a student currently or? Youre a student. What school they go to? If you dont mind saying, what are you taking? Bachelor of Arts? or Bachelor of Science? Oh, youre looking to apply to a Masters degree in Switzerland. Thats exciting. Cool. I think that would be great. I think that is a really wise thing to study right now. I think MBA is a great degree to have. Oh and youre in Croatia. I have a friend who, Im in Canada, but I have a friend who was originally from Croatia, that I went to high school with. So, youre looking to apply to Business Admin. Yeah, I think its a really great program to have right now. I think business skills are necessary the way the world is going. So, I think thats a really smart idea and youre looking. Are you looking to do a masters in business as well? Well, Im glad that you came, Andrew, because we are going to give you some tips about how to apply to schools, so hopefully this will be helpful for you, a nd if you do have any questions please dont hesitate to ask. Cath Anne: [00:10:16] So, Im going to jump into the content. I just kind of gave an overview about, if you dont feel like youre the type of person to pursue the academic path, there are all kinds of paths out there. So, dont get discouraged. Do follow your dream. Follow what makes you happy. Cath Anne: [00:10:44] (To Instagram Viewer): Just undergrad. I just paused because I caught your question, Mandy. What do you mean just undergrad? The tips that Im giving can apply to either a Masters application or an undergraduate application. Certainly Ive applied to, I think three Masters programs, so I can definitely share some of my thoughts on that as well. Yeah, theyre both similar. I definitely think that Masters programs are a bit more in depth. Youre right. So, we can talk a little bit about that are you thinking of applying to a Masters program. Yes. Cath Anne: [00:11:47] (To Instagram Viewer): If you do have any questions, I dont know everything, but I can definitely share my expertise, and share some of my thoughts about my own experience. So, just so you guys know I do work for Homework Help Global, Im one of their top writers and I host this show. I also have a background in social work. So, Ive done quite a few years of college and university as well. So, to see you guys kind of know my background, I know you guys have been havent been here, so just to give a little bit of background on myself. So, youve already completed your undergrad and what are you thinking of taking for your Masters? Cath Anne: [00:12:54] So, I guess first off I wanted to just kind of talk about, and I mean Mandy, this relates to what youre saying is that every application seems to be different. I dont know if youve looked into many of the applications yet, but I found when I was applying to schools that each school kind of had different requirements. Cath Anne: [00:13:17] First of all, its really important to read the applications thoroughly and understand what their requirements are because sometimes it can take some time to gather up all the information that is required of the application. You really dont want to leave that until the last minute. (To Instagram Viewer): So, Mandy youre are thinking of possibly a direct entry nursing program that offers RN and NP accelerated. Okay cool, yeah. I think thats a great way to go, too. I mean nursing is always going to be a needed profession, and its well paid which it should be because youre taking care of peoples health. I think its definitely on the rise. Nursing seems to be becoming more popular and its rewarding because you get to help people, so thats a really noble profession. Cath Anne: [00:14:20] In terms of what I want to share with you guys today, first, the most important part of an application is that youre going to want to make sure that you do your research thoroughly. Mandy, I am talking to you, but Im also talking to the camera on my computer, as well because we record these sessions and put them up on YouTube. So, I am speaking with you. I just want you to think that Im ignoring you. Cath Anne: [00:14:50] So when youre applying, find out which program most interests you and dig into the criteria which are required of you. So in your application you can use the information you gave in your research to make a case for being a good fit for that particular university. Cath Anne: [00:15:10] Some universities abide by a specific approach. So, for example, when I applied to social work school, I knew that schools like York and Ryerson had a specifically anti-oppressive and critical focus. When I was writing my applications, I wrote them through that lens. I had to do some research on what was critical social work and what was anti-oppressive social work. Its really important to understand the theories and perspectives each school promotes in order to determine if it aligns with your goals as a professional and your values. Cath Anne: [00:15:51] (To Instagram Viewer): You need the most help with your essay. OK. Do you know what the essay requires, Mandy? Is it like a letter of intent? Do you need a word around figuring out what to write or how to write it? Im going to keep going because, Mandy seems like Instagram has dropped off there for minutes. Cath Anne: [00:17:13] Another really great tip is that this is also a really good time to look at potential professors that they would like to collaborate with in terms of research. If youre entering your research program, particularly if youre applying to a Masters, finding professors whose work interests you can really be an asset. Cath Anne: [00:17:30] If you go on the website, the schools website, theres usually a section that Ill have a breakdown of each professor that teaches at that school and the types of things that they teach. The reason that this is really great is because you can use this information and if youre intrigued by a certain professor, this is something that you can mention in your application. Usually if youre applying to a Masters program theyre going to ask you about your potential research. A Masters usually requires some component of research. So, theyre going to ask you about what kind of research that you are going to produce as a student. Cath Anne: [00:18:12] Using the name of the professor and drawing on what theyve researched if you dont really have an idea of what your research is going to look like, can be a really beneficial way to get in there and show the university that youre invested in that school and in becoming a student at that school. Another reason this is really great is because schools require research in order to sustain funding and to keep going as a University and also for accreditation purposes. Cath Anne: [00:18:47] This is a very strategic maneuver to mention a particular professor and to discuss what kinds of things that youre interested in researching because this can look really great for your application. It shows that you have a commitment to that school, in particular, and that you have something to invest into that school. Youre not only asking them to take you on, youre showing what you can provide as a future student of that school. That is a highly recommended strategy for this process. Cath Anne: [00:19:57] Secondly, it might be tempting to leave your application to the last minute. They can definitely seem daunting, because there is a large component of writing to them, particularly if youre applying to a masters degree. But, leaving them to the last minute is not recommended. I know that it can seem like a lot of work to do on top of the work that youre already probably doing in your classes. Cath Anne: [00:21:00] Taking the time to write strong college applications is just going to be invaluable to you in your future in academia. So, all these applications require a certain amount of sealed transcripts and other pieces of information. Maybe youve gone to a few different undergraduate schools and you might have to track down your transcripts from all of those places. So, that takes time because they have to be mailed. Cath Anne: [00:21:35] A lot of schools will not e-mail or fax; they require an official transcript, so its really important to look ahead and look at whats going to be required of your application and make sure you give yourself lots of time to fulfill those requirements. You also have to write a letter of intent or some essay component. Sometimes there are ones with different questions to them. You want to give yourself lots of time particularly if youre applying to multiple different schools. Different schools can ask different things of you and you dont want to write the same essay for different schools. Its just not good practice. Cath Anne: [00:22:20] I highly recommend giving yourself at least a few months, if not longer to prepare your applications. You also have to write your resume, or your curriculum vitae, depending on which format you choose. That can take some time. Remember this is a school that you really want to get into. Make sure youre writing meaningfully and with intent because if you choose not to spend time on this the people that are reading the applications theyre going to be your future professors and theyre going to be people who are screening to see if you are a good fit for this institution. They are going to be able to tell if youre invested, so youre really going to want to write with meaning, write with intent. Another is to, after youve finished your application, you might feel that its kind of a highly personalized document I find. You might be sensitive to not wanting to have someone else to read it. However, its important that you give a second pair of eyes when you are about to submit your application. Cath Anne: [00:23:51] It is important to get a second set of eyes when youre applying to a school. Of course, youre going to want anything that you write to be proof read. You can also ask a good friend or a colleague or parent. Even an old professor, probably would be likely happy to look over your application. Cath Anne: [00:24:42] Another thing that I just kind of thought of is too in terms of my last tip that I gave about giving yourself lots of time. Applications usually require at least two to three references and these tend to be either academic and maybe one personal or work type of reference. Make sure youre choosing your references wisely. You want to make sure that it is someone who knows you pretty well, who knows your work, and whos going to make a good reference for you. Cath Anne: [00:25:12] You dont want to choose someone who doesnt really know you that well who can write something specific about you. Give yourself time to do that as well. The best approach when youre looking for references is to always ask the person first if you can use them as a reference in particular when youre doing Masters applications its likely that theyll have to write something. Cath Anne: [00:25:39] Keeping that in mind just make sure you give yourself lots of time to approach that person or to write them a nice email and request that they support you in your academic future. Cath Anne: [00:25:54] Another thing to be mindful of when youre writing your applications is dont pretend to be someone else. So, it really might be tempting to embellish your accomplishments or write about things that you dont really know about thinking that make you seem more appealing. Its like a resume. The UNIVAC Computer History and Development
The Universal Automatic Computer or UNIVAC was a computer milestone achieved by Dr. Presper Eckert and Dr. John Mauchly, the team that invented the ENIAC computer. John Presper Eckert and John Mauchly, after leaving the academic environment of The Moore School of Engineering to start their own computer business, found their first client was the United States Census Bureau. The Bureau needed a new computer to deal with the exploding U.S. population (the beginning of the famous baby boom). In April 1946, a $300,000 deposit was given to Eckert and Mauchly for the research into a new computer called the UNIVAC. UNIVAC Computer The research for the project proceeded badly, and it was not until 1948 that the actual design and contract was finalized. The Census Bureaus ceiling for the project was $400,000. J Presper Eckert and John Mauchly were prepared to absorb any overrun in costs in hopes of recouping from future service contracts, but the economics of the situation brought the inventors to the edge of bankruptcy. In 1950, Eckert and Mauchly were bailed out of financial trouble by Remington Rand Inc. (manufacturers of electric razors), and the Eckert-Mauchly Computer Corporation became the Univac Division of Remington Rand. Remington Rands lawyers unsuccessfully tried to re-negotiate the government contract for additional money. Under threat of legal action, however, Remington Rand had no choice but to complete the UNIVAC at the original price. On March 31, 1951, the Census Bureau accepted delivery of the first UNIVAC computer. The final cost of constructing the first UNIVAC was close to $1 million. Forty-six UNIVAC computers were built for both government and business uses. Remington Rand became the first American manufacturers of a commercial computer system. Their first non-government contract was for General Electrics Appliance Park facility in Louisville, Kentucky, who used the UNIVAC computer for a payroll application. UNIVAC Specs The UNIVAC had an add time of 120 microseconds, multiply time of 1,800 microseconds and a divide time of 3,600 microseconds.Input consisted of magnetic tape with a speed of 12,800 characters per second with a read-in speed of 100 inches per second, records at 20 characters per inch, records at 50 characters per inch, card to tape converter 240 cards per minute, 80 column punched card input 120 characters per inch, and punched paper tape to magnetic tape converter 200 characters a second.Output media/speed was magnetic tape/12,800 characters per second, uniprinter/10-11 characters per second, high-speed printer/600 lines per minute, tape to card converter/120 cards per minute, Rad Lab buffer storage/Hg 3,500 microsecond, or 60 words per minute. Competition with IBM John Presper Eckert and John Mauchlys UNIVAC was a direct competitor with IBMs computing equipmentà for the business market. The speed with which UNIVACs magnetic tape could input data was faster than IBMs punch card technology, but it was not until the presidential election of 1952 that the public accepted the UNIVACs abilities. In a publicity stunt, the UNIVAC computer was used to predict the results of the presidential race between Dwight D. Eisenhower and Adlai Stevenson. The computer had correctly predicted that Eisenhower would win, but the news media decided to blackout the computers prediction and declared that the UNIVAC had been stumped. When the truth was revealed, it was considered amazing that a computer could do what political forecasters could not, and the UNIVAC quickly became a household name. The original UNIVAC now sits in the Smithsonian Institution.

When she rejected him, van Gogh suffered a breakdown. He threw away all his books except for the Bible, and devoted his life to God. He became angry with people at work, telling customers not to buy the ââ¬Å"worthless art. In the winter of 1878, the same thing happened again. Van Gogh volunteered to preach and minister to the sick in south of Belgium. The evangelical committees disagreed with van Sagoââ¬â¢s lifestyle, which begun to take a tone of martyrdom. They refused to renew van Sagoââ¬â¢s contract and he was forced to find another occupation (Vincent Van Gogh). In the fall of 1880, van Gogh decided to move to Brussels and become an artist. Although he had no formal training, his younger brother Thee offered to support van Gogh financially. At the academy, he met Nathan van Rapped, who was to be his most important artist friend during his Dutch period. The Climax of his life In April 1881, van Gogh moved in with his parentââ¬â¢s where he set himself the task of earning how to draw. He experimented endlessly with all sorts of drawing materials and concentrated on mastering the technical aspects of his craft like perspective, anatomy and physiognomy. Most of his subjects were taken from peasant life. After a couple encounters with different women, he moved in again with his parentââ¬â¢s, who were now living in Ennui. The Potato Eaters The paining consisted of 5 figures sitting around a square table eating potatoes. Four of them are females and one male. Although the piece is laced in darkness, the mixed emotions residing in the faces of the occupants shine out brightly. These fugues are so intense that one can nearly hear the conversation being spoken. Subtle aspects create the illusion that the building is an actual residence for the five figures. The portrayal of ordinary peasant life did not come in a burst of creativity. Van Gogh had this painting planned out in advance. Van Gogh had a sense of confidence that took him to advertising the painting before he even had it. Nevertheless, the Potato Eaters failed to become the painting he set his mind to. Today, however, the painting has reached great heights in the artistic community and is considered as one of his retreat masterpieces, as he had intended it to be (The van Gogh Gallery). In Ennui, van Gogh first began painting regularly, modeling himself chiefly on the French painter Jean-Franà §ois Millet, who was famous throughout Europe for his scenes of the harsh life of peasants. Van Gogh set to work with an iron will, depicting the lives of villagers and humble workers. In the end of 1884, he began painting and drawing a major series of heads and work-roughened peasant hands in preparation for a large and complex figure piece that he was planning. By April of 1885, this period of his life came to fruition in the masterpiece of his Dutch Period. In the summer of 1885, he made a large number of drawings of the peasants working in the fields. The supply of models dried up; however, when the local priest forbade his parishioners to pose for van Gogh. He thus turned to painting landscape, inspired in part by a visit to Risks museum in Amsterdam. This same year he enrolled at the academy in Antwerp. He found the lessons rather tedious but was impressed by the city and its museums. He fell under the spell of Ruebenââ¬â¢ palette and brushwork and also discovered Japanese prints. In early 1886, van Gogh went to live with his brother in Paris. There he was finally confronted with the full impact of modern art, especially with the recent work of the impressionists and vivisectionists. He discovered that the dark palette he had developed in Holland was out of date. In order to brighten up he began painting still lives of flowers. The search of his own idiom led him to experiment with impressionist and postmodernists techniques. He also studied the prints of Japanese master. During this time, he made friends with fellow artists such as Paul Gauguin, Emilee Bernard, Paul Signal, and Georges Serrate. Within two years van Gogh name to terms with his latest development and had forged his own highly personal style. In the early 1888, van Gogh was now a mature artist, who went south to Arles, in Provence. There was where he at last began to feel confident about his choice of career. He set out to make a personal contribution to modern art with his daring color combinations. He was swept away by the landscape around Arles. In the spring he painted numerous scenes of fruit trees in full blossom. In the summer he painted the yellow wheat fields. Although he had difficulty finding models, he did make portraits, among which were those in the Rolling family. It was typical of van Sagoââ¬â¢s faith in his own abilities that he decided not to try to sell any work yet but to wait until he had thirty top-class pictures with which he could announce himself to the world. He enjoyed the thought that a number of other artists would come and Join him in Arles, where they could all live and work together. The idea seemed to get off to a promising star when Gauguin arrived in October of 1888 (Vincent Van Gogh [1853-1890]). The End Although towards the end of 1888, his optimism was rudely shattered by the first signs of his illness, a type of epilepsy that took the form of delusions and psychotic attacks. It was during one of those seizures that he cut off his left earlobe. Gauguin made hasty departure and van Sagoââ¬â¢s dreams of an artistââ¬â¢s colony disappeared. In April of 1889 he entered himself in the Saint-Paul-De-Mausoleum asylum as a voluntary patient. Van Gogh was unable to work when he suffered episodes of his illness, if he felt well enough, he went out to draw and paint in the garden or surroundings of the asylum. His use of color, which was once intense, became mute. He tried to make his brushwork more graphic. By the closing months of the year, he successfully had two f his paintings shown at the fifth exhibition of Society des artistes independents. Van Gogh made a large number of ââ¬Å"transitions in colorâ⬠of prints by some of his favorite artists, like Millet and Eugene Delicacies. He found them consoling. They helped him keep in practice (Van Gogh: His Life and Art). Starry Night One of van Sagoââ¬â¢s most well-known paintings is Starry Night. The features within the painting are responsible for its growing popularity. There are actually several main aspects that intrigue those that view the image. The sky is filled with swirling clouds, stars ablaze with their own luminescence and a bright crescent moon. Although the features are exaggerated, it is view most individuals are comfortable with. This painting was painted while in an Asylum at Saint-Remy in 1889 (The van Gogh Gallery). In January of 1890, although he now had a small but growing group of admirers, van Gogh had lost his original passion. He wrote to his brother: ââ¬Å"l feel ââ¬â a failure. Thatââ¬â¢s it as far as I am concerned- I feel that this is the destiny that I accept, that will never change. â⬠He nevertheless continued working hard during his two months in Avers-sure-Jose, producing dozens of paintings and drawings. Life had become an intolerable burden. At Eternityââ¬â¢s Gate At Eternityââ¬â¢s Gate also known as Sorrowing Old Man is an oil painting that he made in 1890 in Saint-Remy. The painting was completed in early May at a time when he was convalescing from a severe relapse in health and two or so months before his death. The work depicts an aged man seated with his head held in his hands, experiencing extreme sorrow and regret at the moment of his passing. Although this was Just once a drawing from 1882, it was until he was at Saint- Remy that he painted this work. It reflects the emotions van Gogh must have been feeling as his mental state deteriorated (The van Gogh Gallery). On July 27, 1890, he hot himself in the chest. He died two days later. Thee, who had stored the bulk of Vincent work in Paris, died six months later. Theses widow, Johanna van Gogh- Bonged returned to Holland with the collection and dedicated herself to getting her brother in law the recognition he deserved. In 1914, with his fame assured, she published the correspondence between the two brothers. Today, van Gogh is considered the greatest Dutch painter after Rembrandt. Unfortunately, van Gogh was not around to witness the greatness his works became. He contributed so much to the artistic community with his use of nature and painting figures the way he arrayed them. Shoe-Horn Sonata Essay An individualââ¬â¢s perception of the world is unique, conflicted by emotions and heavily influenced by their surroundings, thus giving individuals a distinct interpretation of how distinctive experiences convey meaning. The play ââ¬Å"the Shoehorn Sonataâ⬠composed by John Misto in which he explores distinctive experiences highlighting themes and memories, evidently both characters Bridie and Sheila overcame themes of adversity, captivity, human rights and ultimately friendship through embracing their experiences. Mistoââ¬â¢s main focus was to bring forth awareness for the nurses through distinctive experiences. John Misto cleverly instigates aspects of lack of freedom via bringing forth past experiences involved in shaping the characterââ¬â¢s state of mind. Moreover Misto explores the theme captivity and notions of lack of human rights through Bridieââ¬â¢s traumatic war experiences, ââ¬Å"Filthy pits-dug out in the open. We werenââ¬â¢t allowed privacyâ⬠, a basic human right stripped away by the Japanese in which Misto used the pits-dug out to symbolise lack of freedom. Furthermore Bridieââ¬â¢s past experiences introduced via anecdotes evoked past emotions of hatred and fear amongst the Japanese when situated near them, ââ¬Å"Bus load of Japanese touristsâ⬠¦ surrounded me, my heart began to pound in terrorâ⬠, Bridieââ¬â¢s past experiences manipulated her state of mind, this is evident in Bridieââ¬â¢s perception of harmless Japanese tourists. More so Mistoââ¬â¢s utilisation of hyperbole, ââ¬Å"pound in terrorâ⬠while facing the audience, Bridie broke the fourth wall as a result it displayed Bridieââ¬â¢s fragile condition allowing the audience to sympathise for Bridie. A piece of history that re-tell the events which occurred during WWII in the Japanese camps were burned by British, Misto ideally wanted this scene to be acknowledged by audience in order for them to understand Sheilaââ¬â¢s perspective. It was apparent the British did not want the events that impacted the womenââ¬â¢s lives to be known, as they would be considered a shame to the empire. Furthermore it is transparent that the Britishââ¬â¢s response to burn the diaries affected Sheilaââ¬â¢s decision to stay in Perth instead of moving back to her homeland, this notion of staying in Australia is strongly juxtaposed as Sheila is patriotic ââ¬Å"one never stops being British.
